The Austria Ernst Mach Scholarship 2027 is now accepting applications under the ASEA-UNINET programme, offering an excellent opportunity for eligible students, researchers, postdoctoral academics, and music practitioners to continue their academic or professional development in Austria. Funded by Austria’s Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research and administered by OeAD in cooperation with ASEA-UNINET, the programme provides several scholarship routes for applicants from selected Southeast Asian countries.

The Ernst Mach Grant – ASEA-UNINET 2027/28 includes a 36-month PhD opportunity, a 4-to-6-month postdoctoral research grant, and a nine-month Music Practice grant. However, eligibility is limited to citizens of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Who Can Apply for the Ernst Mach Grant?

Full PhD Grant

The Full PhD route is intended for postgraduate applicants who want to complete an entire doctoral degree in Austria. Applicants must have previously studied at a higher-education institution outside Austria and must meet the programme's academic and eligibility requirements.

PhD applicants must also identify an appropriate Austrian institution and secure the support of an eligible doctoral supervisor before submitting their scholarship application.

Postdoctoral Research Grant

The postdoctoral route is specifically aimed at researchers who are already involved in teaching and research at an ASEA-UNINET member university in one of the five eligible countries.

Successful applicants can spend between four and six months conducting research in Austria.

Music Practice Grant

The Music Practice scholarship provides a nine-month opportunity for undergraduate or graduate-level applicants working in areas such as instrumental or vocal performance, composition, or conducting.

Applicants in the relevant categories generally need to be 35 years old or younger, while postdoctoral applicants can be up to 45 years old.

Scholarship Benefits and Funding

The Ernst Mach Scholarship provides €1,300 per month. Full PhD applicants can additionally receive a €300 monthly mobility subsidy, bringing the potential monthly support to €1,600.However, applicants should understand that the grant should not automatically be considered a completely funded scholarship covering every expense. OeAD describes the funding as supplementary, meaning scholars may need additional personal resources.

Accommodation and health insurance are not separately covered. Health insurance costs can currently be around €55 to €200 per month, depending on the circumstances.

Tuition fees also require careful attention. At Austrian public institutions, tuition may be waived upon request under applicable conditions. This does not mean that every applicant automatically receives a universal tuition exemption, and private-university fees are not covered by this provision.

Austria Ernst Mach Scholarship 2027 Application Process

Step 1: Find an Austrian Supervisor

PhD applicants should begin by identifying an eligible Austrian ASEA-UNINET member university and a suitable doctoral supervisor.

Step 2: Prepare a Research Proposal

Develop a strong 5–10 page research proposal explaining the research problem, relevant literature, methodology, expected results, timetable, and potential contribution of the project.

Step 3: Obtain Supervisor Acceptance

Applicants need a formal Letter of Consent or Acceptance from an eligible Austrian supervisor. This makes contacting potential supervisors well before the deadline especially important.

Step 4: Prepare Recommendation Letters

Applicants should arrange two academic recommendation letters. PhD candidates also need a recommendation connected to an ASEA-UNINET member university in an eligible home country.

Step 5: Prepare Supporting Documents

Applicants should prepare documents such as a passport, graduation certificates, language evidence, academic records, and other materials required by the application system.

For PhD applicants, English-language evidence may need to demonstrate B2 or C1 proficiency, depending on the selected programme.

Step 6: Submit the Scholarship Application

The scholarship application is submitted through the relevant Austrian OeAD/grants system. Applicants should carefully check all information before final submission.

Candidates who use generative AI when preparing their research proposal must also disclose this use where required.

Step 7: Complete University Admission

Scholarship applicants may also need to complete a separate admission process with the Austrian university. Scholarship selection and university admission should therefore be treated as related but separate processes.

Selection Process and Deadline

Applications undergo formal screening and expert assessment. Shortlisted candidates may also be invited for a personal interview, where factors such as language ability, research quality, academic background, and project relevance can be considered.

The deadline for the Austria Ernst Mach Scholarship 2027/28 is March 1, 2027.

Because PhD applicants need to develop a substantial proposal and obtain supervisor acceptance, prospective candidates should start preparing several months before the closing date.

Applicants should prepare the required documents, including a research proposal focused on Austrian literature, an academic CV, publication record, and relevant academic certificates.

Applications should be submitted through the official OeAD scholarship application portal before the specified deadline. Make sure all documents are complete and meet the fellowship requirements before submission.
