Studying at the University of Hamburg can open the door to several valuable funding opportunities in Germany and across Europe. However, students searching for University of Hamburg scholarships 2027 should know that there is no single scholarship covering all applicants.

For 2027, three major funding routes stand out: the Deutschlandstipendium, Erasmus+, and the University of Hamburg Merit Scholarship for international students. Each has a different purpose, eligibility requirement, funding level, and application timeline.

The Deutschlandstipendium offers €300 per month for successful students, while Erasmus+ provides financial support for eligible study periods and internships abroad. The Merit Scholarship has historically offered international students up to €992 per month, although the university currently says that no further application round is planned.

Understanding these differences is essential before preparing an application.

Deutschlandstipendium 2027: €300 Monthly Scholarship

The Deutschlandstipendium is one of the most important recurring scholarship opportunities for students already studying at the University of Hamburg.

Successful recipients receive €300 per month. The funding is jointly supported by private sponsors and public funding. Selection is not based solely on academic grades. Academic achievement, social engagement, personal accomplishments, and other forms of achievement can also be considered.

The University of Hamburg normally announces the scholarship competition once a year in October for funding during the following calendar year.

The previous competition for 2026 funding ran from October 22 to November 12, 2025, with approximately 300 scholarships available. Therefore, students seeking Deutschlandstipendium 2027 funding should pay close attention to the expected October–November 2026 application period.

Exact 2027 dates should be confirmed once officially published by the university.

Who Should Consider the Deutschlandstipendium?

This scholarship is particularly relevant to students who are already enrolled at UHH and have a strong academic record combined with meaningful extracurricular, social, or personal achievements.

Some awards may be connected to particular fields of study, while others can be available across disciplines.

Erasmus+ at Universität Hamburg

Another important funding option is Erasmus+, but applicants should not confuse Erasmus+ with Erasmus Mundus scholarships.

At the University of Hamburg, Erasmus+ primarily supports students who are already enrolled at UHH and want to spend part of their degree studying or completing an internship elsewhere in Europe.

For the 2026/27 academic year, Erasmus+ study grants are currently listed at €540 or €600 per month, depending on the destination country. Additional travel support may also be available. Current arrangements limit funded study support to a maximum of three months for a one-semester stay.

The regular Erasmus+ study application deadline is generally January 31 each year, although Mathematics students may follow a different schedule.

Erasmus+ Internship Funding

Students completing eligible internships abroad can receive higher Erasmus+ support. Current traineeship rates range from approximately €690 to €750 per month.

Some students who meet the criteria for fewer-opportunity support may also qualify for an additional €250 monthly top-up.

Importantly, international applicants do not normally use Erasmus+ to apply for admission to the University of Hamburg. Students generally become UHH students first and then use Erasmus+ for an eligible period abroad.

University of Hamburg Merit Scholarship: Up to €992 Monthly

The University of Hamburg Merit Scholarship has historically been one of the most attractive funding opportunities for international students.

Eligible recipients could receive up to €992 per month for 12 months, with renewal possible for a maximum total funding period of two years.

The scholarship was designed for high-performing international students pursuing a degree at the University of Hamburg. Typical eligibility requirements included being a non-German citizen, having completed at least two semesters at UHH, or one semester in a two-year Master's programme, and meeting the relevant BAföG-related conditions. Doctoral researchers were excluded.

However, there is an important update for students planning their studies in 2027.

As of September 2026, the University of Hamburg states that no further calls for applications are currently planned. Therefore, students should not assume that the €992 Merit Scholarship will reopen for 2027.

Applicants should monitor official university announcements rather than relying on older scholarship listings.

PhD Applicants Have a Separate 2027 Route

Doctoral applicants should also distinguish university scholarships from PhD admission opportunities. The Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy Graduate School of Law has application windows relevant to 2027. The stated periods are October 12–December 14, 2026, for Summer Semester 2027, and April 12–June 14, 2027, for Winter Semester 2027/28.

Applicants generally need a strong law degree or suitable research-oriented Master's qualification, a relevant doctoral research topic, a research proposal, academic recommendations, and appropriate German or English language evidence.

For dissertations written in English, the stated minimum is C1, corresponding to at least IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100.

Which University of Hamburg Scholarship Should You Target?

The best funding route depends on your current situation.

If you are already enrolled at Universität Hamburg, the Deutschlandstipendium is an important scholarship to watch during autumn 2026. If you are planning to study or complete an internship elsewhere in Europe, Erasmus+ may be the more relevant option.

International students interested in the former €992 Merit Scholarship should be cautious because the university currently reports that no new application round is planned.

PhD candidates should instead investigate the appropriate graduate-school admission and funding opportunities for their field.
