The Global Invisible Fellowship 2027 in Hungary offers an exciting opportunity for scholars in the social sciences and humanities to pursue research, teaching, and academic collaboration through the Global Invisible University (GIU) initiative. Global Invisible Fellowship 2027 Overview

The Global Invisible Fellowship is designed for established and emerging scholars who want to advance their research while participating in an international academic environment.

The fellowship offers several categories, including Junior and Senior Residential Core Fellowships, Residential Affiliated Fellowships, and fellowships for Threatened Scholars.

Depending on the fellowship category, scholars may spend between three and nine months in residence. Threatened Scholars may also be considered for non-residential support.

Fellows participate in weekly seminars, thematic discussions, research activities, and collaborations with scholars across CEU's academic community.

Global Invisible Fellowship Benefits

The Global Invisible Fellowship in Hungary provides financial and academic support, although the exact benefits depend on the fellowship category.

Monthly Stipend

Senior Fellows receive a net monthly stipend of €2,600, while Junior Fellows receive €1,500 per month.

Threatened Scholars selected for the non-residential fellowship receive a net monthly stipend of €1,000, together with allowances for travel and short-term stays at CEU.

Accommodation

Residential fellows and their families receive accommodation at the Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse. However, fellows are responsible for utility costs associated with the accommodation.

Academic Resources

Fellows have access to CEU facilities and academic resources, including library services, computer facilities, seminar rooms, and conference spaces. The program also provides opportunities for interaction with researchers and academics within CEU and its international networks.

Residential Affiliated Fellows do not receive a stipend and may or may not receive accommodation from the Institute.

Global Invisible Fellowship Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the Global Invisible Fellowship 2027 must meet the program's academic and professional requirements.

Applicants must:

Hold a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification in the social sciences or humanities by the time of application.
Have publications in internationally recognized scholarly outlets.
Demonstrate strong academic and research experience.
Be able to communicate fluently in English.
Be of any nationality, as applicants from all nationalities are encouraged to apply.

Junior Fellowship Eligibility

Applicants for the Junior Fellowship must have received their Ph.D. in 2018 or later.

Scholars whose Ph.D. was awarded before 2018 are considered Senior Fellowship applicants and should apply for the Senior Fellowship category.

Additional Eligibility Restrictions

Current full-time CEU employees and students are not eligible to apply until five years after completing their studies or ending their contract. The relevant degree or contract must have ended by December 31, 2021 or earlier.

Part-time or temporary CEU employees are not eligible for one year after their contract ends. Their contracts must have ended by December 31, 2025 or earlier.Scholars currently affiliated with CEU academic or research units are also not eligible. Former IAS CEU fellows cannot reapply for seven years after their previous fellowship.Applicants may reapply only three times within a five-year period.

Fellowship Opportunities for Threatened Scholars

The Global Invisible Fellowship also provides dedicated opportunities for Threatened Scholars.

This category is intended to support scholars facing serious risks to their academic work, careers, or personal safety. This can include circumstances such as job loss, harassment, legal persecution, or living in areas affected by active military conflict.

Applicants for the Threatened Scholars Fellowship must provide a personal statement explaining the risks they face and/or third-party documentation supporting the nature of the threat.

Threatened Scholars may be offered residential or non-residential support depending on their circumstances and the fellowship category.

Global Invisible Fellowship Application Requirements

Applicants must combine their application materials into one PDF file of no more than 12 MB. The file name should include the applicant's name and the fellowship category being applied for.

The application package should contain:

Letter of Intent – maximum 1,500 words, including discussion of academic freedom and the applicant's contribution to the Global Invisible University.
Research Project Abstract – maximum 150 words.
Research Project Description – between 1,000 and 2,500 words.
Teaching Statement – maximum one page, explaining teaching experience and philosophy.
Academic CV – maximum five pages.
Publication List – up to five important publications for Junior applicants and up to 15 for Senior applicants.
References – Junior Fellowship applicants should provide the names and email addresses of two potential referees.
Risk Documentation – Threatened Scholars should include a personal risk statement and/or relevant third-party documentation.

Applicants should carefully check the application package before submission because incomplete or incorrectly submitted applications may not be considered.

How to Apply for the Global Invisible Fellowship 2027

Applications for the Global Invisible Fellowship 2027/28 are submitted online through the GIU Fellowship Application Form.

First, prepare the complete application package and combine the required documents into a single PDF file. Make sure the file is within the 12 MB limit.

Next, access the official application form, upload the PDF application package, complete the required information, and submit the application.The application form cannot be saved and returned to later, so applicants should have all required documents ready before starting the submission process.Application deadline: 1 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CET.Applicants are encouraged to submit early rather than waiting until the final hours before the deadline.

Global Invisible Fellowship 2027/28 Timeline

The application form opened on 14 August 2026.The final application deadline is 1 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CET.

Successful applicants are expected to be notified in late February 2027, while other applicants should receive notification of the evaluation results by the end of April 2027.

The program offers different residential periods, including three-month, five-month, six-month, and nine-month fellowships, depending on the fellowship category.

Is the Global Invisible Fellowship Fully Funded?

The Global Invisible Fellowship provides substantial financial and academic support, including monthly stipends and accommodation for eligible residential fellows.

However, applicants should understand that travel and healthcare expenses are not fully covered by the fellowship. Fellows are responsible for making their own arrangements and covering these costs.Utilities at the Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse are also charged to fellows.

Therefore, while the fellowship provides significant funding and housing support, applicants should budget for expenses that are not included in the fellowship package.
