The Humboldt Research Fellowship 2027 in Germany will reopen on November 15, 2026, giving international researchers another opportunity to conduct independent research at a German university or research institution.

The fellowship is available to researchers from almost all countries and covers all academic disciplines. Depending on their career stage, successful applicants can receive a monthly fellowship of €3,000 or €3,600, together with additional benefits that can help cover research-related and living expenses in Germany.

The current application round has already reached its maximum of 800 applications and is therefore closed. Researchers interested in the next round should use this waiting period to identify a German academic host, develop their research proposal and prepare the required documents.

What Does the Humboldt Research Fellowship Cover?

The fellowship provides substantial financial support for researchers conducting an independent project with a host in Germany.

Monthly Fellowship

Postdoctoral researchers can receive €3,000 per month for a fellowship lasting between six and 24 months.Experienced researchers can receive €3,600 per month for a period of six to 18 months.

The duration depends on the applicant's career stage and the proposed research project.

Additional Benefits

In addition to the monthly fellowship, successful researchers may receive other forms of support. These can include travel allowances, subsidies toward private health insurance and benefits for accompanying family members.

The programme can also provide intensive German-language training for the fellow and their accompanying partner.

The research stay may be divided into up to three separate periods within three years, depending on the fellowship arrangements and research requirements.

Who Can Apply for the Humboldt Research Fellowship?

The fellowship is designed for researchers with strong academic records and research profiles. Applicants from nearly every country can apply, although nationality and residence conditions should be checked carefully.

Postdoctoral Researchers

Postdoctoral applicants normally need to have completed their doctorate within the previous four years.

Researchers who are close to completing their doctorate may also be eligible if they can provide evidence of their research findings and satisfy the programme's publication requirements.

Experienced Researchers

Experienced researchers normally need to have completed their doctorate within the previous 12 years.

They should demonstrate an independent research profile, significant academic publications and an appropriate academic position or professional research record.

No Fixed Age Limit

The Humboldt Research Fellowship does not have a fixed numerical age limit.

Eligibility is instead linked mainly to the time since completion of the doctorate. Certain recognized career interruptions, including parental leave and other documented career breaks, may affect the calculation.

Applicants should therefore focus on their career stage rather than assuming that their age alone makes them ineligible.

Is IELTS Required for the Humboldt Research Fellowship?

IELTS is not specifically required for the Humboldt Research Fellowship.

Applicants need sufficient language skills to conduct their proposed research effectively.Researchers in natural sciences and engineering generally need good English or German. Applicants in humanities, social sciences and medicine may need German if the proposed research requires it. Where German is not necessary for the research, good English can generally be sufficient.

A German-language certificate should therefore only be included where German is required for the proposed research.

What Documents Are Required?

Preparing the application documents early is one of the most important steps for prospective applicants.

The application generally requires:

  • A two-page academic CV.
  • A research outline of no more than five pages.
  • A complete list of publications.
  • A selected list of important publications.
  • Copies of key publications.
  • A doctoral certificate or proof that the doctorate will be completed before the selection meeting.
  • Two expert reviews.
  • A German-language certificate where German is necessary for the research.
  • A detailed statement from the German academic host.
  • Confirmation that suitable research facilities are available.

The two referees must submit their expert reviews themselves through the protected application system.

How to Apply for the Humboldt Research Fellowship 2027

The application process should begin well before November 15, 2026.

Step 1: Find a German Host

The first major step is identifying an appropriate academic host at a German university or research institution.

The host should have expertise relevant to your proposed research and be able to provide the academic environment needed for the project.

Step 2: Develop Your Research Project

Discuss your research idea with the potential host and refine the project based on their expertise and available facilities.

Your research outline should clearly explain the research question, objectives, methodology and expected academic contribution.

Step 3: Prepare Your Documents

Complete your academic CV, publication lists, research outline and supporting documents.

You should also identify suitable referees and give them enough time to submit their expert reviews.

Step 4: Obtain the Host's Documents

Your German host needs to provide the required statement and confirmation regarding research facilities.

The application is not formally received until the host has completed the required part of the process.

Step 5: Submit Online

Applications are submitted through the official Humboldt Foundation online application portal.

Applicants should complete the process as soon as the next call opens because the round will close after reaching 800 applications.

When Does the Next Humboldt Fellowship Call Open?

The next Humboldt Research Fellowship call opens on November 15, 2026, for the July 2027 selection meeting.

Successful fellows may begin their research stay from September 2027, subject to the fellowship arrangements.

Since the application window is limited by the number of applications rather than simply a traditional calendar deadline, waiting until the last moment can be risky.
