The Scientific Exchange Grants Scholarship 2026 in Germany offers an excellent opportunity for researchers seeking international research experience, specialized training, and collaboration with scientists abroad. The program supports short-term research visits that encourage the exchange of scientific knowledge, expertise, and techniques between research groups.

The Scientific Exchange Grants are offered by EMBO, an organization that supports researchers through funding, fellowships, career development, and international scientific collaboration. The program is particularly focused on the life sciences and enables researchers to visit eligible laboratories to learn new techniques, transfer expertise, and strengthen international research networks.

Unlike scholarships that follow a single annual deadline, applications for Scientific Exchange Grants are accepted throughout the year. However, applicants must submit their application at least 30 days before the planned start of their research visit.

What Are Scientific Exchange Grants?

Scientific Exchange Grants are designed to promote international cooperation between research groups. The funding allows researchers to spend a short period at an eligible host laboratory where they can gain practical experience, learn a specific scientific technique, or collaborate on research activities relevant to their home laboratory.

The program is particularly useful for researchers in the life sciences who need access to specialized expertise, technologies, equipment, or research methods that are not readily available at their home institution.

A research exchange can last from 7 days to 3 months, giving applicants flexibility to design a visit that matches their research objectives.

Benefits of Scientific Exchange Grants 2026

Successful applicants can receive financial support for eligible travel and subsistence expenses during their research exchange.

Travel and Subsistence Support

The grant covers eligible travel costs and subsistence expenses associated with the research visit. The allowance varies depending on the destination country.

Applicants should understand that the funding does not cover every expense associated with an international research trip. In particular, dependents, visa costs, course fees, conference expenses, bench fees, and institutional overheads are not covered.

Research Visit Duration

The supported research exchange can last between 7 days and 3 months (90 days).Researchers may potentially extend their stay for up to three additional months, but any extension beyond the funded period is not financed by EMBO.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

The Scientific Exchange Grants 2026 are intended for active researchers at different stages of their careers. Applicants must generally have at least one year of graduate-level research experience or equivalent.

Research exchanges must take place between eligible laboratories in EMBC Member States and EMBC/EMBO global partner countries. Researchers funded through eligible JST programs may also qualify.

Applicants must be working at an eligible university, research institute, or other qualifying organization, or be funded through an eligible JST program. The proposed exchange should provide a clear benefit to the applicant's research. Training in a specific technique may be eligible when the technique is directly relevant to research being conducted in the applicant's home laboratory.

Important Eligibility Restrictions

Applicants should carefully review the eligibility requirements before preparing their application. Scientific Exchange Grants cannot be used to extend research visits that are already funded by another program.

Applications are also not eligible when the proposed host is a former colleague or supervisor, or when the applicant has an existing or previous collaboration with the host laboratory. Researchers who have previously visited the proposed laboratory may also be excluded.

The grant is not intended to fund participation in courses, workshops, or symposia. Course fees, conference travel, bench fees, overheads, and other expenses outside eligible travel and subsistence costs are not covered.

After completing the research visit, the researcher must return to their home laboratory immediately and remain there for at least six consecutive months.

How to Apply for Scientific Exchange Grants 2026

The application process is completed online through the EMBO application system.

First, applicants should confirm that both their home institution and proposed host laboratory meet the program's eligibility requirements. They should then identify a suitable host researcher whose expertise matches their research objectives.

Applicants should prepare a clear exchange proposal explaining the purpose of the visit, planned activities, techniques or expertise to be acquired, and expected outcomes.

The application must be completed in English and submitted online at least 30 days before the planned start date.

There is no fixed annual deadline, as applications are accepted throughout the year. Applicants should carefully check all information before submission because changes cannot be made after the application has been submitted.

Referees must provide their recommendations through the online application system. Separate reference letters are not accepted.

Application Decision and Research Planning

Applicants should allow sufficient time for the application and review process. According to the provided program information, the EMBO Fellowship Office normally communicates a decision within four months.

Researchers should therefore avoid planning a visit too close to the application date. Early preparation also gives applicants enough time to communicate with potential host laboratories and develop a strong research exchange proposal.
