The Tyndall PhD Scholarship 2027 in Ireland offers an exciting opportunity for researchers interested in wireless communications, artificial intelligence, signal processing, and next-generation sensing technologies. The fully funded PhD project focuses on integrated sensing and communication for UAV and non-terrestrial networks and is based at the Tyndall National Institute in Dublin.

The research will explore how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can communicate while simultaneously sensing their radio-frequency (RF) environment. The project combines theoretical research with practical experimentation, including signal processing algorithms, sensing waveforms, software-defined radios, and real-world UAV field trials.

Tyndall National Institute is known for research in semiconductors, photonics, and deep technologies. The institute also hosts the Wireless Communications Laboratory, where this PhD project will be carried out.

Tyndall PhD Scholarship 2027 Benefits

The scholarship provides financial and professional support throughout the PhD programme. The key benefits include:

  • €25,000 annual tax-free stipend
  • Annual tuition fees paid by Tyndall National Institute
  • 20 days of annual leave for full-time research students, in addition to public holidays
  • Full travel expenses for international conferences where students present project results
  • Training and professional development opportunities
  • Access to advanced research facilities and experimental platforms

The combination of a tax-free stipend, tuition coverage, research facilities, and conference support makes this a strong opportunity for students pursuing a career in wireless technology and deep-tech research.

Tyndall PhD Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have a strong academic and technical background relevant to the research project. Candidates must hold a first-class or upper-second-class honours Bachelor's or Master's degree, MEngSc, or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.Suitable academic backgrounds include:

  • Electrical or electronic engineering
  • Wireless communications
  • Computer science
  • Applied mathematics
  • Physics
  • Related technical disciplines

Applicants should also have knowledge or experience in one or more areas related to the project.

Preferred Technical Skills

Relevant experience may include wireless communications and communication theory, digital signal processing, RF systems, antennas, radar, and sensing systems. Knowledge of machine learning or artificial intelligence for wireless signal processing is also valuable.

Experience with software-defined radios, embedded systems, RF test equipment, or experimental wireless platforms can strengthen an application. Familiarity with technologies such as 5G, 6G, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth is also beneficial.

Applicants with knowledge of beamforming, direction-of-arrival estimation, time-difference-of-arrival localisation, Kalman filtering, tracking, detection theory, or radar-based signal processing may be particularly well suited to the project.

Programming experience using Python, MATLAB, C++, Julia, GNU Radio, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar tools is also relevant.Experience with UAVs, robotics, navigation, localisation, outdoor field experiments, or measurement campaigns is an advantage.

Tyndall PhD Research Project

The research focuses on developing technologies that allow UAV platforms to perform communication and sensing simultaneously. This could support future applications involving non-terrestrial networks and advanced wireless systems.

The project includes both theoretical and experimental components. Researchers may develop new algorithms and waveforms before implementing and testing them using programmable hardware and software-defined radios.

Laboratory experiments and outdoor field trials involving RF transmitters and UAV platforms will provide opportunities to validate the research under realistic conditions.

How to Apply for Tyndall PhD Scholarship 2027

Applicants should prepare their materials carefully before submitting an application.

Application Steps

  • Review the official PhD project description and essential criteria.

  • Confirm that your academic background and technical experience match the requirements.
  • Prepare an up-to-date CV or resume.
  • Write a brief motivation letter explaining how you meet the essential criteria.
  • Postgraduate applicants whose first language is not English should prepare valid English-language evidence according to UCC regulations.
  • Submit the application through the official Tyndall application portal.
  • Check all uploaded documents before submitting the application.

Garda vetting or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process. Applicants can also make confidential informal enquiries to Dr Boris Galkin regarding the project.

Tyndall PhD Scholarship Deadline

The application deadline is 1:00 p.m. on October 23, 2026. Applicants should submit their applications before the closing time and avoid waiting until the final day.

Early preparation is particularly useful for candidates who need to obtain English-language certificates or supporting academic documents.
