Studying abroad through an exchange programme can be an excellent way to gain international academic experience, but travel, accommodation, food, and other living expenses can make an overseas semester difficult to afford. The Heyning-Roelli Foundation Scholarships in Switzerland 2027 provide partial financial support to academically talented Bachelor’s and Master’s students who face financial difficulties while completing an eligible exchange or study-related stay.

The scholarship is designed specifically for temporary academic mobility. It does not provide admission to a Swiss university or fund an entire degree programme. For students planning an eligible Spring 2027 exchange semester, the application deadline is 20 October 2026.

Heyning-Roelli Switzerland Scholarships 2027 Overview

The Heyning-Roelli Foundation supports students whose financial resources are insufficient to cover the costs associated with an eligible international study stay involving Switzerland. Both incoming and outgoing exchange students may qualify, depending on their mobility arrangement.

  • Scholarship: Heyning-Roelli Foundation Scholarship
  • Intake: Spring 2027
  • Study levels: Bachelor’s and Master’s
  • Location: Switzerland and eligible international exchange destinations
  • Funding: Partial financial support
  • Eligible expenses: Primarily travel and living costs
  • Application fee: None
  • Spring 2027 deadline: 20 October 2026
  • Decision period: By the end of November 2026

The foundation assesses each application individually, so there is no guaranteed fixed scholarship amount.

Who Can Apply for the Heyning-Roelli Scholarship?

The scholarship is intended for academically capable students who can demonstrate financial need and have an eligible connection to a Swiss institution through an exchange arrangement.

Applicants should generally be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme and remain enrolled at their home institution during the exchange. They must also have exchange-student status at the host institution and intend to return to their home university to continue their studies.

Eligible mobility arrangements can include the Swiss-European Mobility Programme and formal exchange agreements between Swiss and foreign universities. Swiss universities of applied sciences are also included in the current application categories.

Students should confirm their eligibility with their university's international office before applying. This is particularly important because the foundation's scholarship requirements and the university's exchange requirements must both be satisfied.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

The Heyning-Roelli Foundation scholarship provides partial financial assistance rather than a standard full scholarship. The foundation considers the student's financial situation, destination, duration of the stay, and other available financial resources when determining support.

Travel and living expenses can form an important part of the financial assessment. However, applicants should not assume that the foundation will cover their entire exchange budget.

Before applying, prepare a realistic estimate of your expected costs. Consider accommodation, food, transportation, insurance, travel, and other necessary expenses. Then compare these costs with your savings, family support, and other scholarships or grants.

The amount awarded is assessed individually, and receiving another source of funding does not automatically exclude an applicant.

Required Documents for the 2027 Scholarship

A complete application should clearly demonstrate your academic background, exchange plans, and financial circumstances. Applicants should prepare the following documents:

Motivation Letter

Write a motivation letter of no more than one A4 page. Explain your academic goals, why the exchange is important to your studies, and why you require financial support.

Academic Transcript

Provide an official or appropriate academic record showing your previous university performance.

GPA Conversion

The application process includes a GPA conversion requirement. Applicants should save the required screenshot or PDF generated through the calculator linked in the application form.

Proof of Exchange Placement

You may provide university confirmation, a nomination email, or another document confirming your planned exchange or thesis placement. If final confirmation is not yet available, preliminary evidence may be accepted in certain circumstances.

Financial Evidence

Documents such as bank statements, tax records, or family-support letters can help demonstrate financial need.

CV and Identification

Prepare an updated CV together with a passport copy or, where applicable, a B/C residence permit.

How to Apply for the Heyning-Roelli Scholarship

Applications are submitted online through the foundation's official application system. Applications are no longer accepted by email.

First, confirm your exchange arrangement and relevant university deadlines with your international office. Next, review the foundation's eligibility requirements and select the appropriate exchange or thesis application route.

When completing the form, provide accurate information about your university, exchange destination, stay dates, income, financial support, and expected expenses. Financial figures should be reported for the whole stay in CHF, rather than simply providing monthly amounts.

Finally, upload all supporting documents and submit the application before the deadline. Missing information or documents can affect whether an application can be reviewed.

Spring 2027 Application Deadline

The deadline for the Heyning-Roelli Switzerland Scholarships 2027 Spring Intake is 20 October 2026. The application information specifies a midnight Central European time cutoff, so applicants should avoid waiting until the final hours.

Spring-round decisions are expected to be communicated by email by the end of November 2026.Students applying for the separate thesis-abroad route should follow that route's specific timeline, as it generally requires an application at least one month before the planned thesis or study period begins.
